The character of Frank Drebin first appeared in a short-lived television series called Police Squad, unfortunately it only lasted for 6 episodes. However, with the success of the Airplane movies by the same producers, the time was right to bring the characters back in their own movie.

With the exception of Leslie Nielsen and a couple of others, most of the other parts from the television series were recast for the movies. Also a love interest was added for the character of Frank Drebin in the form of Jane Spencer (played by Priscilla Presley).

The release of the first movie proved to be very popular, so much so that two more movies were released in 1991 and 1994. It is likely that more in the series would have been made if it were not for the incident which involved O.J. Simpson. It is believed that Leslie Nielsen has stated that he would make no further Naked Gun movies unless Simpson was back in the role of Nordberg, something which is unlikely to ever happen.

Still, these three movies do provide a great many laughs and are entertaining. If you are a fan of movies such as Airplane, Top Secret, Hot Shots, Rat Race then you are very likely to enjoy this series.
